Startup Success Story: Spacious

Hong Kong’s Spacious is one of the latest in a series of startups in Asia to raise funding to simplify the process of finding a property to buy or rent. Spacious is an incredibly spacious multipurpose responsive theme coded & designed with a lot of care and love. You can use it for your business, portfolio, blogging or any type of site. It is an online residential real estate marketplace, connecting buyers, and tenants with properties throughout Asia.

The founder of Spacious is Asif Ghafoor Spacious and it was founded in 2013. Asif Ghafoor was part of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation incubator program, former Goldman Sachs and Standard Chartered Bank development manager, and senior IT director and application architect.

Spacious is headquartered in Hong Kong. As of 2015, the website includes rental listings, service apartments, and apartments for sale in Hong Kong, a haunted house database, and an affordability feature, where users can search for apartments based on their monthly income.

Co-Founders of Spacious Asif Ghafoor and David Beatty come from property owning families from London and Australia. Both David and Asif come from strong technology backgrounds with 20+ years of software experience between them. They met at Goldman Sachs and worked together for 10 years prior to making the decision to leave the banking industry and build their own company.

According to them when they moved to Hong Kong, they found that HongKongHomes.com trying to get a feel for the real estate market. “The websites we used to see details about available spaces left something to be desired. We found many listings with no photos, and when there were photos they were often small, limited in number, and blurry. This was a new startup, Spacious, is aiming to change all that and more,” They said.

Moving further on the foundation idea of their startup, Ghafoor and Beatty said, “We immediately saw a need for something better in the Asia market. By solving the problems of market transparency and providing a better end to end user experience Spacious hopes to become the dominant player. We have built a world-class user interface combined with a data and rich content platform that presents an experience second to none when searching for a place to buy or rent.”

Spacious has been funded by Ghafoor and Beatty with assistance from the Hong Kong Science Park incubation program which was a “huge help” in getting up and running. Allen Yeung, Vice President, Business Development and Technology Support at the Hong Kong Science Park said, “The property market in Hong Kong is a huge and important factor in the economy. We chose Spacious as a participant in our Incu-App program because we see the potential for the company not just to be successful financially but to enrich the local community here in Hong Kong”.

Ghafoor said, “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to find a place to live in Asia. We want to become the number one online property portal for Asia”. And now Spacious has 4-page layouts, 2-page templates, 4 blog display types, 13 widgets areas, 5 custom widgets focusing on a business template, awesome slider, primary color option to match your logo & website, boxed & wide layout, light & dark color skin, translation ready, and much more. And you can use it for your business and for any type of site.

Spacious announced that it has closed a $3 million round, following in the footsteps of 99.co (Singapore), Zipmatch (Philippines), Lamudi (emerging markets), and Housing.com (India) among others. As for future plans, Ghafoor is looking to push the business on in Hong Kong and also expand into other cities in Asia.
